I hope you've missed me as much as I have missed you. We had a fabulous time in Playa, but it is good to be back in the pouring rain. I didn't find any wonderful skincare products but sat under my palapa with a smug grin on my face as I watched everyone baking themselves to a wrinkled crisp in the sun.
Don was one of them and refuses to let me show a picture of him, handsome as he looks.
One thing that I couldn't help noticing was that the all-inclusive resort was two-thirds overweight people, half of whom were obese. The breakfast buffet was absolutely huge, occupying four sides and the center of a very large room adjoining the seating area. It was divided into five or six areas with a color code for various health requirements such as "low cholesterol," "high fiber," and so on. One area was defined as "indulgence." One wall was entirely packed with fruits, the centre was all cereal, including four hot choices with toppings such as grated coconut and flax seed, and another side consisted of chefs preparing egg dishes, waffles, crepes, etc. The breads, buns and other baked goods section was massive with wonderfully healthy breads and a variety of spreads. However...
Every one of the obese people, some driving around in scooters, were loading their plates with bacon, fried eggs, sausages, etc. One enterprising gent took a basket off one of the tables and filled it with Danishes and chocolate croissants (about 20 of them as they were quite small) to share with his equally large wife after they had gone back at least three times for reloads of the bacon, sausages and eggs.
Now, I have all the understanding and respect in the world for people who "eat their pain" as a dear friend of mine did. (She is now down to 125 pounds after eating herself to over 300), but these people were just stuffing themselves silly because it was an all-inclusive.
Around the pool, the margaritas were flowing, and several younger people were p*ss drunk and unable to walk back to their rooms. (These are the same people who fall off balconies and whose loved ones then blame everyone and everything except the goofs involved.) Of course, there are the cases where someone has genuinely passed out from heat or food poisoning, but the people I saw were entirely aware of what they were drinking and entirely drunk and disorderly because of it.
It was fascinating to watch these people trying to kill themselves with food and liquor. Of course most of us drink and eat a little too much on vacation and it's part of the fun, but this was verging on insanity.
While I was away, a rather large contract arrived and, along with my novel that has to be finished before January 15, will keep me really busy for a few months. I will still be posting here, but likely only twice a week. Friday will still be my product review day.
Upcoming topics include pH and your skin and an update on aging hair. (Speaking of aging hair, that pic of me was taken in the rain and wind. The rain is so strange down there. One minute you'll be lazing around in sunshine and suddenly there's a huge downpour from a very small grey cloud.)
It's good to be back...
